Spanish Authorities Uncover Massive Ponzi Scheme Behind Madeira Invest Club, Arrest Alleged Mastermind

Spanish authorities have exposed one of Europe’s largest crypto-related Ponzi schemes, centered on the Madeira Invest Club, and arrested its alleged leader following a major international investigation. The scheme solicited investments from over 3,000 victims across Europe and Latin America, luring them with promises of “guaranteed returns” of up to 20% per year on contracts tied to cryptocurrency, real estate, gold, luxury goods, and other high-profile assets. In reality, the organization did not pursue any legitimate investment activities; money from new investors was simply used to pay out earlier participants—a textbook Ponzi operation.
Promoted as an exclusive club, Madeira Invest Club drew in retail investors with aggressive marketing campaigns and endorsements across social media. Behind the facade, funds were funneled through a maze of shell companies and offshore bank accounts that spanned at least ten countries, including Portugal, the UK, the US, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Investigators tracked millions in investor money, including a single Singapore-based account holding €29 million.
The scam unraveled after a year-long inquiry that coordinated efforts of Europol, US federal agents, and authorities from multiple Asian countries. The operation—dubbed Operation PONEI—culminated in the arrest and detention without bail of the group’s alleged mastermind. Prosecutors are now preparing charges for fraud, money laundering, and criminal conspiracy.
Adding a controversial twist, the investigation revealed a €100,000 donation from the accused ringleader to a European Parliament member, raising concerns about political influence. While authorities have seized some assets and launched efforts to recover losses, many victims remain affected by the club’s collapse.
The Madeira Invest Club case highlights the risks facing retail investors in the rapidly evolving crypto market, especially when regulatory oversight is inconsistent across borders. It underscores the critical need for transparency, verified custodians, and robust due diligence—reminding investors to be wary of “guaranteed returns” and exclusive investment opportunities, particularly in the world of digital assets.
